2. Chiang Rai
Stay
About the destination: Chiang Rai is the capital of Chiang Rai Province, Northern Thailand and is the main commercial center serving the Golden Triangle border region of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. It is an excellent base for exploring the region. Chiang Rai is essentially a service city for the surrounding province. Despite its relatively small population, Chiang Rai has respected universities and other civic facilities. The character is distinctly Northern and is distinct to Chiang Mai to the south in various ways. The food is definitely spicier and the ethnic composition includes a good percentage of hill tribes and Myanmar exiles such as various varieties of Karen tribespeople. There are many temples and museums to explore. The White Temple is spectacular and well worth a visit and the Hill Tribe Museum and Education Centre is the perfect place to learn more about the hill tribes and their cultures. There is a very good night market that also features an open-air food court. Buffalo Horn Hill has a splendid overview of Chiang Rai. Chiang Rai is one of the best spots to do trekking in Thailand, what with its alluring mountains and numerous hill-tribes. Chiang Rai retains a small-town charm that makes it a perfect destination to enjoy the local culture and nature.

3. Chiang Mai
Stay
About the destination: Chiang Mai is the hub of Northern Thailand and the Capital City of the Province of this name. With a population of over 170,000 in the city proper, it is Thailand's fifth-largest city. Located on a plain at an elevation of 316 m, surrounded by mountains and lush countryside, it is much greener and quieter than the capital, and has a cosmopolitan air and a significant expat population, factors which have led many from Bangkok to settle permanently in this "Rose of the North". Chiang Mai's historical center is the walled city. Sections of the wall remain at the gates and corners, but of the rest only the moat remains. Inside Chiang Mai's remaining city walls are more than 30 temples dating back to the founding of the principality, in a combination of Burmese, Sri Lankan and Lanna Thai styles, decorated with beautiful wood carvings, Naga staircases, leonine and angelic guardians, gilded umbrellas and pagodas laced with gold filigree. The most famous is Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, which overlooks the city from a mountainside 13 km away. Modern-day Chiang Mai has expanded in all directions, but particularly to the east towards the Ping River, Mae Nam Ping, where Chang Klan Rd, the famous Night Bazaar and the bulk of Chiang Mai's hotels and guest houses are located. Loi Kroh Rd is the center of the city's night life.

4. Surat Thani
Stop
About the destination: Welcome to Surat Thani, a gem of Southern Thailand that offers travelers an authentic glimpse into the traditional Thai lifestyle, away from the bustling tourist spots. Known as the gateway to the islands of the Gulf of Thailand, such as Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao, Surat Thani is a province that boasts a rich cultural heritage, spectacular natural beauty, and a laid-back atmosphere that invites you to explore at your own pace. Begin your adventure in Surat Thani Town, the provincial capital, where you can soak in the local culture. Wander through the bustling night markets like the San Chao Market, where you can sample Southern Thai delicacies such as 'kanom jeen' (rice noodles with curry) and 'moo hong' (braised pork belly). The Tapi River that flows through the town is a hive of activity; enjoy a riverfront stroll or take a traditional long-tail boat to experience the scenic waterways. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the majestic Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya, an ancient Buddhist temple with a history that dates back to the Srivijaya period. Surat Thani is also your starting point for adventure to the stunning Ang Thong National Marine Park, a pristine archipelago of 42 islands with towering limestone mountains, thick jungle, white-sand beaches, waterfalls, and hidden coves and lakes to explore. Take a day trip or an overnight tour to experience the park's unspoiled beauty, enjoy snorkeling or kayaking, and maybe even spot some wildlife. If you're looking for a more secluded experience, venture into the Khao Sok National Park, home to one of the world's oldest rainforests, breathtaking limestone karsts, and the stunning Cheow Lan Lake. No visit to Surat Thani would be complete without embracing the tranquil rural life that unfolds outside the city. Take a ride through the countryside to see rubber plantations, coconut groves, and fruit orchards. Visit the small fishing villages where life moves at a slower pace and the friendliness of the locals will warm your heart. In Surat Thani, every day is a chance to discover something new, be it a hidden temple, a local festival, or a peaceful spot by the river to sit and watch the world go by. Come and experience the enchanting simplicity that Surat Thani has to offer.

5. Khao Sok National Park
Stay
About the destination: Beautiful sandstone and mudstone rocks rise about 300–600 m above sea level. The park is traversed by a limestone mountain range from north to south with a high point of 950 m. This mountain range is hit by monsoon rain coming from both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, which makes it among Thailand's wettest regions with an annual rain fall of 3,500 mm.[citation needed] Heavy rainfall and falling leaves led to the erosion of the limestone rocks and created the significant karst formations seen today.
